The Disney African American Princess, Tiana and the “Just One Kiss Doll”
It’s finally happened. After decades, Disney has created the first African American Princess, Princess Tiana. Princess Tiana is the heroine of the new Disney movie “The Princess and the Frog”. Along with the movie, of course there will be Princess Tiana dolls.
Princess Tiana has a special role to play. Up until this time, there have been no princess African American dolls. And what girls has never dreamed at least once in her life of being a princess? This is a doll that young black girls will relate to easily. A Princess they can claim as their own.
One of the most adorable the Princess Tiana, “Just One Kiss Doll”, reenacts the mythic scene of the kiss. Princess Tiana is wearing her tiara, and a beautiful shimmering blue gown. She carries Prince Naveen as a frog on her forearm. The doll repeats lines from the move. Magical sounds emanate from the dress.
Disney always makes the old new and interesting. This is a fresh retelling of the Grimms fairy tale, “The Frog Prince”. New Orleans, the fabled birthplace of jazz, has now become the scene of this well known European fable. Of course there is a bayou twist in the retelling. The Young Tiana gets turned into a frog; both she and Prince Naveen must find a way to overcome this malignant voodoo spell.
