The Benefit of Outsourcing
Outsourcing can cause great success or tremendous frustration for many businesses. Business in the U.S., especially small companies, look for a quick cost-cutting advantage by outsourcing work to India, Russia, the Philippines, or other countries, only to find they’ve lost out or cause inefficiencies by giving up managerial control of a project. .
This is why outsourcing should not be considered solely on the grounds of cost savings. Any cost benefit analysis of outsourcing should attempt to put a quantifier on, or at least consider qualitatively, the effect of the loss of supervision and direct control. My advice is to never go with the highest outsource bidder, or the lowest one… it’s better to have something in the middle that balances the quality and cost. Another important thing is to use a provider that has a high degree of competency testing, and provides this data in a verifiable way. Even better are companies like ODesk who allow for real-time monitoring of the work via electronic means.
