Robert Henri and American Realism – The Ash Can School
In 1892, wanting to show a contemporary view of the working class, Robert Henri, an American artist, gathered together four young realists who painted scenes portraying life in the poorer neighborhoods of New York City. Their names were John Sloan, William A. Glackens, Everett Shinn, and George Luks. Henri stated: “Paint what you see. Paint what is real to you.” Their work was exhibited in a show in 1908.
