Make Your Own Soap

So you’ve seen those expensive, gourmet, boutique soaps and thought I could make that! But where do you start? Which method is the right one for you? Let’s start with a short history of soap making and a summary of the different methods commonly used today to make soap.

Soap was made in colonial time using potash and pearlash. These potash and pearlash soaps were used by everyone from the reigning monarchs to the peasants, who made their own soap as an annual or semiannual event. Waste cooking grease and ashes from their fires were saved all during the year and made into primitive soaps. These soaps were harsh and greasy. The handmade soaps we are seeing and making now are possible because of the choice of ingredients we use.

There are 4 basic methods of making soap  used today – Melt and Pour, Cold Process, Hot Process and Rebatching.
