Screen printing is the traditional method of transferring color to a t-shirt or polo shirt by applying color with ink. It was a technique first used by the Chinese almost 2000 years ago. They used human hair stretched across a wooden frame to form the screen. To that they attached a stencil made from leaves stuck together into different shapes. This was probably the first application of screen printing ever.

In order to screen print an item the design has to be separated into the component colors (nowadays handled by a vectored design program) and then each color has a separate screen produced using light reactive chemicals.

The ink can then be screen printed onto the t shirts directly or via transfer paper and a heat press. Screen printing is ideal for large quantities of printed garments but can be expensive for smaller orders requiring more than one color.
