How to a Fix Corrupt Registry Manually
Recently, my parents experienced a computer slow down, so they asked for my assistance in finding out what was wrong. I did the basic scan of the files, and I defragged their hard drive. None of this helped, so I started thinking it must be an issue with their computer registry. Here are some tips to Fix Corrupt Registry manually.
First, a computer registry is a database of files and entries with information on how your computer hardware and software should behave. An incorrect registry will cause the programs on your computer not function correctly. Some techies think you should perform a registry fix on a weekly basis. I think it depends on how often you access the internet. If you are online everyday all day, you may need to do this more frequently.
There are five major sections of the Windows Registry you will need to be concerned with, if you are manually checking your registries. They are:
• HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
• HKEY_CURRENT_USER
• HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
• HKEY_USERS
• HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG
The HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT stores information pertaining to registered applications and should be edited if you want to remove invalid entries pertaining to applications. You would want to check this section of your registry if your computer is crashing constantly.
The HKEY_CURRENT_USER stores information relating to the user currently logged into the system, and is usually only checked if you are experiencing issues with user settings.
The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE stores information and settings relating to the local computer and should be reviewed and edited if you are having hardware problems.
The HKEY_USERS is where the subkeys related to the user profiles are stored.
The HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG stores runtime information and should be edited if your computer is running slow or constantly crashing.
I have a very high level knowledge of computer registries. I am by no mean an expert. So, after doing some basic research, I decided to purchase a registry cleanup software package. I did not want to render my parent’s computer inoperable, so I felt it would be best to invest in this software to do the technical registry cleanup. Even though I used a software package, I still took a backup of the system prior to running the software.
