Department Store Cosmetics: Skin tone v. Foundation Color

Lets face it.  All women have problems choosing the correct base  for their skin tone and type.   We all have seen lovely women walking around with that “orange” or “pink” glow and many that mysteriously have a white neck and a brown face.   This is a direct result of not getting the concept of skin tone not to say forgetting to really take an all over look at your face and neck before leaving your vanity mirror.

Prior to heading of to select department store cosmetics or to Target, to select your foundation, make certain you understand what skin tone you fall under. You can buy great foundations just about anywhere these days as long as you know your shade.   However, unless you seek department store cosmetics, the packaging in places such as Target or Walgreen’s is not user-friendly to test out your color prior to your purchase.  So if you don’t purchase department store cosmetics, you have to try it and return it if it doesn’t work for you, but that’s okay.

Skin tones usually come in three basic categories, which are Warm, Cool and Neutral. Foundation is really meant to even out YOUR skin tone, not change your skin color.  It should enhance what you have and conceal any discolorations or imperfections, to a degree.

If your skin tone is warm, meaning slightly pigmented, look for  gold, golden yellows, bronzes, burnt oranges.   If warm toned clothing enhances your natural beauty, then this is probably for you . In some cases you will actually see yellow, or an orange red in your skin tone which is a dead on clue that you are warm toned.   But not matter what, the best way to select foundation is to apply just a tad on the side of your face, if you can see it when it is absorbed, then it is wrong.   Your perfect foundation match should blend right in to your skin tone and provide as much cover as you need.

And something that I always do is purchase a setting powder that compliments your foundation. I find that wearing powder over my foundation offers easier blush application.  Also, I like to have a powder to match for days that I do not want to wear any foundation at all.  Like during the summertime, I never wear foundation, just a little powder for oil control and ease of color application.

This fact calls for having two foundations and two powders.  One of each for summer and one of each for winter, since naturally your skin tone will darken with any sun exposure.  So make that trip back to the department store This fact calls for having two foundations and two powders.  One of each for summer and one of each for winter, since naturally your skin tone will darken with any sun exposure.  So make that trip back to the department store cosmetic counter some time in June and ask a color consultant to assist you in your correct foundation and base powder for summer.   For refills or other department store cosmetics in the convenience of your home I suggest you visit www.departmentstorecosmetics.com for a wide variety and selection of professional and name-brand cosmetics.
